Introduction to Camera Movement Research

What is camera movement? Camera movement is a filmmaking technique that causes a change in frame or perspective through the movement of the camera.

How is camera movement useful in film? Camera movement shifts the audience's view without cutting and can be used to make a film more immersive and engaging.

Who is responsible for camera movement in production? Cinematographers and directors.

2 famous people in the film industry and 3 movies that they worked on:

Roger Deakins

-1917(2019)

-Blade Runner 2049(2017)

-Sicario(2015)

Chung-hoon Chung

-Last Night in Soho(2021)

-It(2017)

-Uncharted(2022)

A camera movement I already knew about was tilt. This is a camera movement I see often in films with big characters or settings. The best example of this camera movement is in Jurassic Park when camera tilts are used to portray the size of the dinosaurs.

Another camera movement technique I already knew about is camera zoom. I remember when I used to binge the office, I always noticed the sudden zooms on characters that would add comedic effect, especially if they were breaking the fourth wall.

Introduction to Camera composition PowerPoint

 What is camera composition?

The way elements of a scene are arranged in a camera frame. Shot composition refers to the arrangement of visual elements to convey an intended message.

The objective of this assignment was to analyze the main concepts of camera framing and camera composition. We were to watch the following videos:

-Camera Framing in film https://youtu.be/qQNiqzuXjoM
-Camera Composition Ep 11 Video (Point, Line, and Shape)https://youtu.be/nKM3jkEOpuE?t=25
-Camera Composition Ep 11 Video (Depth and Balance)https://youtu.be/hUmZldt0DTg
-Camera Focus Ep 4 Video (Deep Focus and Shallow Focus)https://youtu.be/ZGNUqNFfD8M

From there we were to find examples from various movies matching the shots in section 3 and 4 for a total of 16 images. The goal was to define each camerawork shot, list two key point, name the movie and year, and create an action line.

What did I learn?
From this assignment, I learned how to better identify camera composition as well as define them. Analyzing the main concepts of camera composition made me look at some of these movies through a different perspective. The more I study camerawork, the more I understand how the way a camera is held can highly impact the art of a scene.

Introduction to Storyboarding Camera Composition

What is camera composition?

-The Rule of Thirds Shot #1
-Symmetry Shot #2
-Asymmetry Shot #3
-Point Shot #4
-Leading lines Shot #5
-Shapes Shot #6
-Deep Focus Shot #7
-Shallow Focus #8
The objective of this assignment was to create a storyboard that defines the action or description lines and illustrate a simple drawing on a hard copy worksheet provided to represent each of the above key concepts.

What did I learn?
This assignment taught me how to develop a storyboard to plan and apply the techniques used to create camera composition in their respective categories. Before this assignment, I had never drawn an original storyboard with different camera composition and labels. The camera composition terms taught can be used to create a better scenery for the viewer an add an overall depth to the film.

Introduction to Storyboarding Camera Framing

 What is camera framing?
-One/Single Shot #1
-Two Shot #2
-Three Shot #3
-Four Shot #4
-Crowd Shot #5
-Point of View #6
-Over the shoulder Shot #7
-Insert Shot #8
The objective of this assignment was to create a storyboard that defines the action or description lines and illustrate a simple drawing on a hard copy worksheet provided to represent each of the above key concepts.

What did I learn?
This assignment taught me how to develop a storyboard to plan and apply the techniques used to create camera framing in their respective categories. Before this assignment, I had never drawn an original storyboard with different camera framing and labels. The camera framing terms I learned can definitely be used when we start making our film, especially because my film is going to have more than one person in the frame. This assignment allowed me to get really creative and have fun with color.

Introduction to Storyboarding Camera Angles

What are camera angles?
-High angle
-Low angle
-Eye level
-Dutch/Canted
-Overhead level
-Cowboy/Hip level
-Knee level
-Ground level

The objective of the assignment was to create a storyboard that defines the action or description lines and to illustrate simple drawings on a hard copy worksheet provided to represent each of the key concepts above.
What did I learn?
This assignment taught me how to develop a storyboard to plan and apply the techniques used to create camera angles in their respective categories. Before this assignment, I had never drawn an original storyboard with different camera angles and labels, so this was a really fun assignment to work on. The angles also helped me practice perspective.

Introduction to Storyboarding Shot Sizes

What are shot sizes?
-Establishing shot
-Master shot
-Wide shot
-Full shot
-Medium full shot
-Medium shot
-Medium close up
-Close up
-Extreme close up
The objective of the assignment was to create a storyboard that defines the action or description lines and to illustrate simple drawings on a hard copy worksheet provided to represent each of the key concepts above.

What did I learn?
This assignment taught me how to develop a storyboard to plan and apply the techniques used to create camera shot sizes in their respective categories. Before this assignment, I had never drawn an original storyboard with different camera shots and labels, so this was a very informative assignment to work on especially since these terms can reused in the future when I'm ready to start working on the film.

Creative Critical Reflection

My creative critical reflection! I loved putting this PowerPoint together and making it match the film created with our group.
